Day 15 of 18:
Today has been another long driving day, over 700 miles. We started at 6 am and went to
Mt Rushmore. Unfortunately we took the scenic route, which took allot longer, so we did
not get to the hotel until midnight.
When we stopped to get fuel, I talked to someone who claimed to have won a Bright Blue NB,
he was so excited. We chatted for about 10 minutes, gave him one of the NB list stickers,
our web site address and a Herbie. We then went to the Sugar Shack for lunch, we both had
the sugar burger (1/2 lb burger with green peppers, onions and Swiss cheese). After lunch
we went to Mt Rushmore cavern.
We also got the tachometer stuck at 4100 rpms. Does anyone know if there is a governor or
something? Would a chip fix the problem or will it never go higher up to the redline? See
photos.
Then on to Crazy Horse monument, which was very impressive. They have been working on it
since 1948. It will be great if they ever finish. It was much more impressive than Mt
Rushmore, except for one thing. There was road construction everywhere, which means the
car is a mess.
We finally got to Mt Rushmore about 5 pm, and there was a purple bug, a thing and a Bright
Blue NB in the parking lot with a custom Nebraska plate. As we walked in, I noticed a guy
with a Nebraska jacket and asked if that was his bug. He said sure, the Nebraska VW club
is here on a road trip!!! Before I knew it I had 10 or so people gathered around all
talking VW, they really loved my tie-dyed blue old bug T-shirt. We chatted awhile then
traded cards and web site info. They were leaving, but it was started raining, so we hit
the gift shot, took about 10 pictures and headed out. We came up on them parked together
in a lot, and drove past and tossed a Herbie to them, hit the only kid in the group in the
head :-) I was planning a drive by Herbie attack, but they called us back for photos. I
circled back around, and now I have 8 cameras stuck in my car. Gave another
Herbie to one
of the ladies and our web site to another and we were off. They seemed like a really fun
group.
Then we headed east. Because of time we just took drive by shots of the Bad Lands.
